Just found the right apartment for rent in Brooklyn? Now it’s time for your move.
Whether you do the move yourself with a few buddies or family or you hire professional movers, here are some very good tips that will help you make sure your furnishings arrive safely and on time.
1 Don’t Wait!
Start Packing 3-4 weeks before the movers arrive.
2 Purging

3 Packing Materials
Moving Boxes can make a big difference in the outcome of your move. Like anything else, the quality of the box can determine the strength it has to survive a long distance move. Do not over pack your boxes!
4 Packing Dishware
When packing your Dishes, be sure to pack them on their edges instead of packing them flat. The edge is the strongest part of the plate! Packing with White Paper is better than Newspaper as it can leave non-removable ink stains on your dishware.
5 Nuts & Bolts
Pack all of your loose furniture parts into plastic bags (i.e. – Bed parts, Tables, Entertainment Center Hinges, etc.).
6 Staying Organized
Focus on one room at a time. Do not try to consolidate all the boxes into one room. When you are done packing a box, slide the box against the wall of that room; it will make it easier for a final box count once you have finished packing. Be sure to Label the boxes to the corresponding rooms.
7 Take them with you!
Be sure to bring all the items you will need while your shipment is in transit (i.e. – Clothes, Linens, Prescriptions, Valuables, etc.) This will prevent unexpected expenses!
8 Important Documents
Bring all of your important papers/documents with you. (i.e – your new lease, parking permit, etc.). You may need them to get settled into your new building.
9 Cleaning Products
Do not purchase cleaning products close to your move out date as they cannot be shipped. Some Non-Shippable Items are: Bleach, Paint, Aerosol cans, Perishable foods, Plants).
10 Quilted Padding
Quilted Pads should be provided by a Moving Company at no additional cost to you. Beware, some companies will charge for the Rolls of Tape to hold the pads together.
11 Final Walk Through
On your Move Out Day – Make a Final walk through to be sure the movers took everything.
12 Checking Inventory
It’s a good idea to have 2 people present upon delivery. One person to check the inventory list with the driver as your shipment is being unloaded and the other to direct the movers as to where your items should be placed inside your new home.
13 Booking Flights
Do not book any flights or appointments on your pick up or delivery dates.
14 Empty Drawers
Dressers & Cabinets must be completely emptied to avoid damages or breakage of your furniture.
15 Baby Cribs
For Safety Regulations, Most Moving Companies will not reassemble baby cribs. Please be sure to have a knowledgeable person to assist you in doing so.
16 Keep Everyone Updated
It is important to keep everyone involved in the move updates (i.e. – Move Out Dates, Closings, Delivery Dates, Inventory List, Packing Needed, etc.)
17 Building Restrictions
It is important to check with your building management for Building Restrictions. Some are but not limited to: Elevator Reservations, Pick-up Times, Parking Restrictions, Truck Clearance and/or require a Certificate of Insurance, etc.
18 Chilled Water
Please know that the Movers are working hard, it is greatly appreciated to have some chilled water or soda available.
