Secure your apartment.

Think security systems are only for homeowners? That’s certainly not the case anymore. Today’s apartment alarm technology has helped create many more choices available in the rental segments of the  security market.

New York City apartment renters want to feel safe too – and they can, using some renter-friendly home security devices. Don’t forget about home automation technology that offers the promise of convenience and energy efficiency. Any way you look at it, there’s no shortage of ways renters can make their space safer and more efficient.

And if you’re a homeowner, there are numerous security providers that focus on standard residential security – from regional companies like Slomin’s New York to big-name brands, and more.

Home automation: Make your residence a ‘smart home’

One of the biggest trends emerging on the security scene is home automation. Anything that makes people’s busy lives easier and more convenient is always better, especially for New York City apartment renters. Controlling home systems (such as lighting and HVAC units) and appliances are just a few examples of what home automation lets you do.

Apartment renters can increase their security with Smartphone apps.

Some of the new kids on the block in this trend include Canary, an all-in-one home security device outfitted with lots of familiar home security equipment features controlled with a smartphone. The initial service and smartphone app are free. If you want optional services, such as call center backup or additional data options and storage, they are available for an additional fee.

Some of Canary’s features that are optimal for apartment dwellers include:

  • Easy setup – A quick, do-it-yourself installation with no need for a professional technician
  • No contracts – A great feature if you have only a 6-month or 1-year lease
  • Cost-saving features – Home automation capabilities that let you control your thermostat settings (Canary also “learns” your habits through sensors that track temperature and many other environmental factors in your home. If it senses anything out of place or off from your normal habits and routine, it will alert you on your smartphone and ask how you want to respond)

Piper from Blacksumac is another device that allows renters to enjoy a home security/automation experience. Piper has advanced video surveillance capabilities. Other home automation features that Piper offers apartment tenants in NYC are the ability to remotely lock doors, adjust thermostat settings and turn on lights and video surveillance to scope out an empty apartment before they enter.

A new take on old technology

Some other new and notable names in the home security venue include Nest and Doorbot. Like Canary and Piper, these products don’t require a complicated installation process and easily synch with your smartphone. Renters will love this feature, because they can take their security setup with them when they move.

The Nest Protect is a new and improved version of a smoke detector. It also detects carbon monoxide and alerts you in a calm, non-threatening way, unlike standard beeping smoke alarms usually do. We’ve all burned a dinner or two, but instead of having an alarm continuously remind you that there’s smoke present in your home or apartment, Nest Protect features a way to silence false (or unnecessary) alarms – the Nest Wave. Simply move close to the smoke detector, wave your arm back and forth and … silence.

Doorbot is basically a security camera that synchs with your doorbell. Someone rings your bell and you can see who’s there without even going to the door, thanks to an app that lets you view the visitor on you r smartphone.

Most of these products cost anywhere from $100 to several hundred dollars. Some may not even be available for sale to the public yet, but keep an eye out. They’ll be right at home in your apartment.
