apartments in nycOne thing we all agree upon is that Craigslist offers a wide variety of classifieds we can choose from, all the way from furniture to rental listings and beyond. One thing Craigslist is not know for however is being perfectly safe when it comes to scammers and possible fake entries around their ads.

Thankfully, there are ways we can at least be more vigilant about how things are done on craigslist, as this is especially important with significant investments like that of renting an apartment. The following are some pointers on what you need to do or what to expect to stay as safe as possible as you look for your apartment rental in New York. We begin with the following:

  • The first thing you may want to do is focus your search only on those places that let you have face-to-face contact with your future landlord. If you can’t meet the landlord, see if a friend of your can.
  • If possible, do your best to do most, if not all exchanges in person instead of remotely. Craigslist doesn’t take responsibility for transactions and possible problems originating from those, as it acts more like an ad medium, rather than a mediator between buyer and seller of the services it lists.
  • Something else you can do is to insist on paying with cash and in the landlord’s office or home, with everything in writing  and with all personal documentation shown so you can be sure. Although this may sound a bit paranoid, its better to be safe than sorry when it comes to doing any type of business. Avoid making payments via wire transfer.
  • Insist on visiting the apartment for rent so you can be sure you are really dealing with a location that exists and is for rent. Never do anything remotely without confirming the real people and rental apartment or home behind it.
  • Have a decent idea about the range of the prices in your chosen area. You can go through other classifieds, such as those in papers or other websites. A much better alternative, however would be to speak with a no fee apartment rental service such as RDNY.com. When you speak with RDNY.com, you can get much more accurate and relevant information. Nothing can give you a better approach to rentals than an organization that has been in the rental business for over 18 years.
  • A good thing to keep in mind as the most basic of signs a listing may be fake is whether that listing sounds far too good to be true. After all, this is one of the tactics many fraudsters use to make their offers seem more lucrative to those targeted by their offers.
  • Use Google Maps or other similar services to get a recent snapshot of the area or even the very street the property is located on. This will allow you check out not only its physical existence, but also what interesting places are nearby if you do rent it.
