If you’re looking to live in a doorman building, the Upper East Side is the place to start your search. There are more doorman buildings on the Upper East Side than any other neighborhood.
Interestingly, since many of the doorman buildings are of 1950s to 1980 “white brick” vintage, they are among the least expensive doorman buildings around! To keep it even less expensive, the Upper East Side is THE place for NYC no fee apartments.
Many of the “hot” neighborhoods never had doorman buildings until very recently. New construction doorman buildings are generally built with amenities that were never dreamed of in the 1950s to 1980s. So the new buildings are more expensive, but they offer more. Aging doorman buildings on the Upper East Side may offer a garage in the building and a doorman, but often little more than that. Due to the nature of the area, Manhattan apartments for rent on the Upper East Side are usually in very good condition and they rent quickly.
While we are on the subject of no fee apartments in NYC, the Upper East Side neighborhood offers just about any kind of service you might want. The Upper East Side is basically the largest expanse of “nice” blocks and friendly neighborhood businesses in the city. There are restaurants on virtually every single block and supermarkets every few blocks. If you live on the Upper East Side, you are in danger of drowning in a sea of take-out and delivery menus slipped under your door or stacked in your lobby.
